"Bayeux"

the former capital of the Bessin, was the first French town to be liberated on the 7th of June 1944 and was spared damage during the war. Visit the famous Bayeux tapestry, an original masterpiece that tells the story of the invasion of England by William the conqueror's in 1066, the cathedral with its Romanesque and gothic architecture, and the Memorial Museum of the battle of Normandy near the British cemetery, Stroll around and explore Bayeux's medieval center... just like Tom Thumb, follow the bronze markers on the ground. It's easy ! Bayeux is ideally located to visit many places of interest :

"American Beaches"

Start with Arromanches and its artificial harbour "The Mulberry B". Go on to Longues sur Mer where the German 6 inches guns are still in place today. Stop in the fishing port of Port en Bessin, then visit the US Military Cemetery overlooking "Omaha Beach". Continue for a few miles to the Pointe du Hoc taken on the morning of 6th of June by Colonel Rudder's Rangers and end tour with Utah Beach and Sainte-Mère-Eglise.

 

"British & Canadian Beaches"

From Courseulles follow the steps of the British and Canadian armies until Ouistreham passing by Gold, Juno and Sword. Stop for a coffee at Bénouville and discover Pegasus bridge where the British Airbone troops were the first to set foot in occupied France. Visit Caen and its fortified castle, the two abbeys (abbaye aux hommes) and the Memorial for peace.
